Find the Right Face Mount or Flush Hinges for Your Doors
Every cabinet door needs a hinge to allow it to open and shut properly. Depending on your cabinet construction and on the style of your home, you may opt for one of several different types of hinges to get the job done. Two of the most common types of hinges are surface or face mount hinges and flush hinges. These are both simple, common, and easy to install hinge types that many people can put in themselves, without any cutting or routing of the cabinet doors or frames.
Surface mount or face mount hinges are one of the oldest types. They mount to the face of the cabinet frame, and to the face of your cabinet door. This makes the hinge visible and part of your decor. Some types of face mount hinges also install on the face of the frame, but the inside of the cabinet, making them a concealed hinge that does not require any cutting into the face of the cabinet itself.
A flush hinge is only used when there is no overlay on the cabinet door, and the door and the frame itself are the same thickness. This is a partially concealed hinge type, which again does not require any cutting or routing of the cabinet, making it simple to install. One portion of the hinge mounts to the frame, while the other portion mounts to the inner door. The knuckles or edge of the hinge itself can be seen when the door is shut, but the hinge is otherwise hidden from view, making this a good choice in transitional kitchens.
No matter what type of cabinets you have in your home, you can be sure to find a set of hinges that matches your needs.
