Invention Out of Necessity

Children and the handicap-able often struggle to complete the most routine of tasks like opening drawers, cabinet and doors. What to do? Well, if you are four year old Sydney Dittman, rather than wait for parental assistance, you take matters into your own small hands.
This daughter of invention opened cabinets of possibilities by developing a plunger-like device that uses suction to open drawers. Aptly named “Aid” this simply brilliant contraption was described in the patent abstract as being;
“An apparatus for grasping circular knobs which may be attached to drawers or doors of cabinets or the like including a generally dome-shaped grasping element having a handle attached thereto and extending outwardly therefrom. The internal surface of the generally dome-shaped element includes a series of internal shoulders of various diameters for the purpose of grasping knobs of various sizes so that the handicapped person may more easily manipulate the drawer or door to which the knob is attached.”
It also led to her being the youngest person ever to be granted a United States patent.
