In honor of Dr. Seuss we are going to talk about clever an economical ways to decorate a room for your kids. After all, there are many places they will go and most will happen in their imagination in their own room.
Your child’s age, gender and interest will guide your design theme but there are some basic guidelines that apply for decorating for children. To make the process fun for both you and your child below are decorating tips and an ideas for making the space your own.
Tip: Kids always need help staying organized. So be sure and keep shelves, storage bins and closet racks at their height level.
Idea: Visit your local home improvement store and look for multiple use DIY closet kits. As your child grows so can their closet simply by adjusting the height of shelving and racks.
Tip: Kids need varied lighting and lots of it. Think about their schedules, activities an interest a study or craft area should be by a window and add a table lamp to that space – and don’t forget the night lights
Idea: Take a field trip to your local craft and hobby stores sell an additive to paint that allows it to glow in the dark. Try painting stars and a moon on your child’s ceiling or a cityscape around the edge of the room.
Tip: Kids love to create so build in artful ways to showcase their imagination.
Idea: Create a continuous and renewable art center by adding wainscoting and painting below it with chalkboard paint.
Tip: Kids love to collect so make it easy for them and organic to your design.
Idea: Try hanging pictures and other collectables from string in front of a window or hung from the wall as a border.
Tip: Kids need display space, and much like lighting, they need lots of it.
Idea: Incorporate re-purposed items to create book shelves, magnetic boards and storage benches.
Most importantly, make your child your co-designer and involve them in the process throughout. As they say — there is no one alive more you-er than you!
