Keep Your Doors Shut with Cabinet Catches

In an ideal situation, every time you shut your cabinet doors, they’ll remain in a closed position until you open them again. In many homes, however, this is not the case. Humidity, weight, and time can cause a cabinet door or frame to warp slightly or simply readjust itself. So while your cabinet door once shut firmly against the frame, it may not hang slightly ajar. Add in the fact that many cabinets will often warp at once, often in different directions, and suddenly your cabinet doors may be looking a little dilapidated.

One of the fastest and easiest ways to correct this problem is with cabinet catches. Catches are designed to do just that – catch your cabinet door and hold it tightly against the frame so it doesn’t swing open on its own. Catches let go easily with a slight tug on the cabinet handle, so they don’t interfere with regular use. When installed properly, catches can give your kitchen a quick facelift by straighten all of your loose, hanging cabinet doors.

Catches come in two basic styles: magnetic and roller. Magnetic catches use a thin metal plate on either the door or the frame, with a magnetized catch on the other side. When the two sections get close together, the magnet tugs the door and frame toward one another, holding the door closed.

Roller catches require a little more effort on the part of the user to get the door shut, but hold it more tightly in place. On the door is a small loop that fits between two rollers on the frame. The rollers turn to grab the loop, holding it tightly until you tug the door open again.

Both types are fairly unobtrusive, remaining hidden when the doors are shut. So if you’re having trouble keeping your cabinets in line, consider some catches to solve the problem.
